Pancreatic Cancer Among SSA Compassionate Allowances Conditions

Which Conditions Qualify Under the SSA Compassionate Allowances Program

Phoenix, United States – May 23, 2026 / Pekas Smith: Arizona Disability Attorneys /

PHOENIX, AZ. Many applicants mistakenly believe that receiving a specific diagnosis is enough to secure Social Security Disability benefits. In reality, the Social Security Administration (SSA) uses a detailed Listing of Impairments – known as the Blue Book – that requires applicants to meet precise medical criteria, not simply present a diagnosis. Pekas Smith, an Arizona disability law firm, has released guidance outlining which conditions qualify for disability under the Blue Book and what supporting evidence the SSA expects to see.

The Blue Book covers 14 adult body system categories, including musculoskeletal disorders, special senses and speech, respiratory disorders, cardiovascular system, digestive system, genitourinary disorders, hematological disorders, skin disorders, endocrine disorders, congenital disorders, neurological disorders, mental disorders, malignant neoplastic diseases (cancer), and immune system disorders. Each category contains specific diagnostic criteria, severity thresholds, and functional limitations that must be documented in the medical record. A diagnosis alone is rarely enough. The claimant’s records must demonstrate that the impairment meets or medically equals every element outlined in the applicable listing.

Beyond the standard Blue Book listings, the SSA also maintains a Compassionate Allowances list, which is designed to fast-track claims involving severe conditions where the diagnosis itself aligns with the SSA’s definition of disability. Conditions on this list include certain aggressive cancers such as pancreatic cancer and acute leukemia, early-onset Alzheimer’s disease, ALS, and various rare genetic disorders. While the Compassionate Allowances program represents the SSA’s closest approximation to automatic qualification, it applies to a limited set of conditions and still requires proper medical documentation to support the claim.

“A diagnosis on the Blue Book is the starting point, not the conclusion. We frequently work with claimants whose conditions are on a listing but whose medical records do not document the specific findings the SSA needs to see. The difference between approval and denial often comes down to whether the treating physician’s notes capture the right details about severity and functional impact.” Tye Smith, Founding Partner at Pekas Smith

For applicants whose conditions fall short of a Blue Book listing, a medical-vocational allowance may offer an alternative path to approval. Under this approach, the SSA evaluates how the combined effect of a claimant’s impairments limits their ability to perform past work or transition to other employment. This pathway accounts for a significant portion of approvals across the country and tends to be especially relevant for older applicants and those with limited education or work history.
