California Trim Clinic Clarifies What 2026 ASCO Research on GLP-1 Medications and Cancer Does — and Does Not — Show

California Trim Clinic explains what new GLP-1 and cancer research presented at the 2026 ASCO Annual Meeting actually shows — and why these early, observational findings do not mean GLP-1 medications prevent or treat cancer.

Westlake Village, CA (PRUnderground) June 23rd, 2026

At one of the world’s largest cancer research meetings this summer, scientists shared early findings that have a lot of people asking questions: do the popular weight-loss medications known as GLP-1s have anything to do with cancer? California Trim Clinic  is a physician-supervised Medical Weight Loss & Peptide Therapy practice serving patients nationwide, is helping patients understand what the research actually says — and, just as importantly, what it does not say.

The research was presented at the 2026 American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Annual Meeting, held in Chicago from May 29 to June 2.

What the studies found

In one study, researchers at Cleveland Clinic looked at more than 10,000 people who already had cancer. Some started a GLP-1 medication after their diagnosis; others took a different diabetes drug. The patients on GLP-1s were less likely to have their cancer spread to an advanced stage in four cancer types — lung, breast, colorectal, and liver. Importantly, three other cancers studied — prostate, pancreatic, and kidney — showed no clear difference.

In a separate study, researchers at the University of Pennsylvania reviewed records from more than 110,000 women and found that those taking GLP-1 medications were diagnosed with breast cancer roughly 30% less often than those who weren’t. The findings were published in JCO Oncology Practice.

What this does NOT mean

This is the part California Trim Clinic wants patients to hear clearly: these studies do not prove that GLP-1 medications prevent or treat cancer, and no one should start a GLP-1 medication for that reason.

Both studies were “observational” — meaning researchers looked back at existing records rather than running a controlled experiment. That kind of study can spot an interesting pattern, but it can’t prove that the medication caused the result. People who take GLP-1s may differ from those who don’t in many ways the data can’t fully account for. The researchers themselves have called for proper clinical trials before any conclusions are drawn.

“This is encouraging early science, and it’s worth following — but it is not a green light to use these medications as a cancer strategy,” said a spokesperson for California Trim Clinic. “GLP-1 medications are approved tools for weight and metabolic health, and that’s how we use them. The best-proven way to lower cancer risk remains the basics: maintaining a healthy weight, staying active, and keeping up with recommended cancer screenings.”

The bottom line

GLP-1 medications continue to be studied for benefits beyond weight loss and diabetes, and the cancer research is one more reason scientists are paying attention. But the evidence today is early and unproven. Patients with questions about their own health, cancer risk, or screening should talk with their own healthcare provider.

California Trim Clinic does not offer cancer prevention or cancer treatment services, and GLP-1 medications are not approved for those purposes.
